Europe wakes up with a hangover
Posted by Marnie G on 05/31/05Reacting to the result of yesterday’s referendum in France, Monica Frassoni and Daniel Cohn-Bendit, co-presidents of the Greens/EFA group, said:
“The Greens in the European Parliament take notice of the will of the majority of the French citizens, but are are deeply disappointed by the rejection of the European constitution. After years of drafting the constitution, the EU has today woken up with a hangover. Our project of a strong political union of Europe today is more difficult to realise.”
“We acknowledge that the vote illustrates a deep mistrust among French citizens of the EU and its institutions, even though there might have been a desire to show the French government a red card. But the result still stands.”
“But Europe should not stop today . The need for a democratic constitution for Europe still stands. The best answer to the French “Non” is a positive initiative to relaunch the European project.”
I have written an analysis and it is posted at http://www.gp360.net/eu.shtml along with some other commentary on the EU.
